A little sweet, a little tart, a little unexpected

American Quince at Greenberry House, Meadows of Dan, Virginia

The giant American Quince in my yard grew from a tiny twig given to me by a neighbor. In the winter it sometimes blooms on bare branches, then the cold kills the flowers. Dozens of tiny birds then cover the bush to feed on the dead buds.
